Death in the Darkness Over Germany: Defending the Reich is an operational level simulation of the epic night struggle between RAF Bomber Command and the Luftwaffe's Nachtjagdflieger night-fighters during the critical period of 1943-1944. As Nazi Germany's fortunes become ever more desperate, and the RAF ever more confident, the struggle is taken to new heights over the darkened cities of Germany and Central Europe. This is the story of that struggle, written large in the piercing searchlights, burning cities and plummeting aircraft. The verses begin as you relentlessly match wits with your opponent, and then continue as brave men venture out into the night. The ending is yours to write, but one thing is certain. To falter, is to lose the tide of the war.

Heading for Germany

|

During a typical turn, the British player plans his raids, taking into account flak levels, bomb loads, routes, and active night fighter bases. In addition to actual missions, diversionary raids can also be set up to confuse the enemy and make him waste precious time and availability chasing nothing more than airborne phantoms.

In preparing for the onslaught, the German player organizes his gruppen with different types of aircraft squadrons, and decides which squadrons to upgrade. Once the RAF intruders have crossed the radar line, he must discern between spoof missions and main force raids, and launch his interceptors to knock as many bombers out of the sky as possible. Decide to launch your intercepts too soon, and your pilots run out of time and fuel. Wait too long, and your cities burn.
